Physiotherapy FAQs

  • Bring clothing with you that is loose and allows you to move easily. When possible for an upper-body issue wear a t-shirt or tank top, and for a lower-body issue wear shorts. Depending on the area of concern, I may ask you to show me the area as part of the evaluation.

  • During an assessment session, you can expect that we’ll talk about the area of concern, any past history that’s important to know about, and your treatment goals. After this, we’ll take a closer look at the area of concern.

Typically this includes having you go through active movements, testing your muscle and/or nerve function, and, with your permission, taking a feel of the area of concern. Treatment during the assessment session may include taping, manual therapy (hands-on) techniques, and acupuncture or dry needling. We’ll also talk about what you should be working on at home to feel better.

Vestibular Physiotherapy FAQs

  • Bring clothing with you that is loose and allows you to move easily. When possible for an upper-body issue wear a t-shirt or tank top, and for a lower-body issue wear shorts. Depending on the area of concern, I may ask you to show me the area as part of the evaluation.

  • We will begin with a detailed history of what’s been going on. After this, we start with the physical exam. Typically this includes moving the head and neck, looking at the movement of your eyes, and an in-depth look at the inner ear, including testing using infra-red goggles. Depending on what is seen during this part of the examination, we may also look at your balance and walking.

  • In most cases, yes! After we go through the physical evaluation, the rest of our time together is spent on talking about what the results of the testing mean and what will help you feel better.

If the results show Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), this may mean going through a maneuver in theclinic to treat it.

If you have another condition, we will review exercises together that you will work on at home to help improve your symptoms.

  • There are some cases where it’s best to have someone drive with you to the clinic. Please email or call me at the clinic so we can discuss your specific case.

Vestibular Therapy for Children FAQs

  • I’ll start with a detailed history and go from there based on how your child is feeling. A typical appointment includes looking at neck and eye movements, assessing the vestibular system with infrared goggles and other tests, and looking at your child's walking and balance. I keep in mind that every child's attention span and willingness to go through testing is different, so it's possible some of this information may have to be gathered during a follow-up appointment.

We’ll review the results of the testing and talk about what next steps are to help your child feel their best.

  • It's common to have a set of exercises to work on daily at home with your child for most vestibular conditions. If this applies to your child, we'll review these exercises during your appointment and you'll receive detailed instructions by email following your appointment.

  • During your child's appointment, they'll be expected to move into different positions. Please bring loose but comfortable clothes with you, and a pair of running shoes, if possible.

  • Each child’s response to the assessment and treatment sessions, and their exercises, is different. It’s common for your child to experience their symptoms, and possibly new symptoms, during a session or their exercises. It’s typical for this to be a short-term response and is not a sign of harm. Knowing what brings on and improves your child’s symptoms helps me with treatment planning, so I’ll keep a close watch over anything they tell me about during a session or their home exercises.
